2018 marks the James A. Michener Art Museum’s 30th anniversary. The Museum has accomplished a great deal since its founding, including evolving the physical location of the Museum into a world class facility, developing a wide range of programs, events, art classes, and performances, not to mention the establishment and rapid growth of the Michener’s permanent collection of art. To commemorate this milestone, 30 Years: Art at the Michener, 1988-2018 provides our community with an opportunity for introspection while allowing for renewed access to the collection, both in the Museum’s galleries and in its vault.
Since the Michener opened its doors in 1988, it has expanded both its vision and collection, which now numbers more than 3500 paintings, sculptures, photographs, and works on paper. Many of those works have been exhibited regularly and have become beloved favorites to the Michener’s regular visitors, while others remain in the vault, waiting for a future exhibition to bring them into the Museum’s galleries. In this special exhibition, we invite our community to celebrate the collection’s growth over the past three decades by learning new stories about familiar works of art and discover art objects from the Museum’s vault that have never been exhibited before.
